About My CP Guide

Who developed My CP Guide?

People with cerebral palsy are at the heart of the development of this website. Based on what you asked for through co-design, we located and assessed the most current and credible information that the world has to offer. The team of people who compiled this information for you has experience in disability services, education, research, resource creation, and with lived experience of cerebral palsy. We work alongside with people that understand you including people with CP, their families, medical experts, allied health, researchers, and advocates, to provide information you can trust.

My CP guide is led by Cerebral Palsy Australia as part of a consortium of Australian organisations, including Ability First Australia, Cerebral Palsy Alliance, and the Cerebral Palsy Support Network. These organisations are committed to delivering high-quality, accessible information to people with cerebral palsy, their carers, supporters, communities, and the services they interact with.

Cerebral Palsy Australia received funding from the Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing.

Our research

In 2020, My CP Guide commissioned a large-scale research project focussed on the information needs of people with CP and their support networks. The research gathered first-hand information from parents and carers raising a child with CP, those growing up with CP, and older adults living their lives with CP.

The research highlighted that the information needs of people with CP, and their family and carers, vary a lot; with the age and life stage of the person with CP heavily influencing those needs. It also highlighted the challenges in finding reliable, useful, and timely information about CP - as well as the difficulties that exist when seeking support.

This study gave My CP Guide a deeper understanding of what information was important, was currently difficult to access, and in what formats it is most useful. This evidence base enabled My CP Guide to develop our platform, which now provides access to trusted information for people with CP and their support networks.

My CP Guide wants to improve the outcomes for people with CP and their support networks. To do this, we believe it is important to release our research to the public and allow the opportunity for talented professionals to work towards finding solutions to the problems raised in the research.

This research provides an in-depth insight into the information needs of the CP community in Australia across a number of life stages. The information has been divided by life stage, as the individual needs and preferences can vary significantly between them. This research explains the various types of information that people need at these different points of life, what the key challenges are, the most helpful ways in which information can be provided, and what the opportunities are for further information and resource development.
